My review of the best Air Conditioners, Fans and Curtains in Canada
We've all been there, a heat wave is rolling in and your house is getting hotter than ever - you can't sleep, the dog is panting and your cat is going berserk. You get fed up, go online and start researching best air conditioners Canada, fans Canada, cooling tips Canada, etc. Oh I know. I'm feeling it here in Calgary right now. It's 33 degrees and it's 10 o'clock at night. It's funny how we have such extremes here in Canada. In the winter you start researching space heaters. In the summer you start researching air conditioners.

Best Air Conditioners Canada
OK, so I’ve done all of this. Seriously. I am obsessed with getting a good deal and since I rent I wasn’t going to get central air installed. I can imagine that’s a hard pill to swallow for a lot of folks who just need to cool down a room or two for a couple of months. This is why I have created a site of the best portable air conditioners Canada has to offer.
The thing is, not only is the heat uncomfortable, it can also be hazardous to you and your pets health. Heat exhaustion can occur even in your own home due to hot, sunny and humid weather. This is why its important to keep your house cool in the summer and watch for signs of heat stroke. Moreover, if you have pets it’s imperative that you keep them cool and also be aware of their symptoms, particularly dogs who are prone to extreme weather changes. Just ask my Boston Terrier, she like to live at a comfortable 17 to 22 degrees C (no joke!).
So, in light of all the research I did, I decided perhaps I should share this knowledge and I developed coolerhomes.ca. I have learned that you can keep your home cool in the summer by following a few simple steps. While keeping your house cool without air conditioning (ac) is possible, the purchase of an energy efficient portable air conditioner in Canada can be both practical and economic. These can be extremely effective in cooling a single room or small apartment and aren’t too hard on your electricity bill either.
It’s too hot!
OK, so you need to cool your house down right now and you’d rather not spend an afternoon at an appliance store wondering if a product is a good deal. This is why I’ve always been a fan of Amazon Prime, they ship the products within hours of ordering and its on your doorstep in a day or two with no added shipping fees regardless of the size or weight. Amazon also has a fantastic return policy if you aren’t completely satisfied with your purchase. As such, I have provided a list of the best air conditioners Canada has on Amazon when I was researching the heck out of this stuff.
With the right system, you can keep your house cool throughout the summer in Canada and you don’t have to break the bank or invest in central air. In Canada, most of us are familiar with jumping in our cars to go to work and turning on the heater in the morning and using the air conditioning on the way home. With such variability in temperature, climate control is key, and you can accomplish this cost effectively with energy efficiency using a combination of tools including an air conditioner, a fan and sun blocking curtains. All of these can be on your doorstep in a few days, plug-and-play and your house will return to that sanctuary of comfort you lost when the temperature rose by 10 degrees overnight.
Portable Air Conditioners are outside my budget
Hey I get it! In fact, I’ve been there. This is why I’m writing blog posts on tips for keeping your home cool in the summer without AC. This was my game plan for years. I recommend a combination of fans and sun blocking curtains. Of course, the best thing you can do to keep your house cool in the summer is upgrade your insulation and windows, but I know that this isn’t always practical nor affordable. Plus in my case…I rent so that’s out! As such, the best tips for keeping your house cool in the summer are as follows:
- Early morning – windows open, enjoy the morning sunshine and allow cool air to penetrate using fans. Ceiling fans should spin in reverse to pull air up and push out.
- Late morning to late afternoon – windows closed, sun-blocking curtains closed, allow fans to circulate air, ceiling fans should spin forward to push air down.
- Late afternoon to overnight – windows open, curtains open, all fans on full, enjoy the sunset!
Determining the best air conditioner, fan or curtains
Here’s how I did my research initially and I’ve put all of this on the site and made it simple for you to find the best portable air conditioner in Canada, as well as fans and sun blocking curtains:
- First, I looked at air conditioners, fans and curtains on Amazon Canada that have consistently received high ratings and are based on quality and genuine reviews. I evaluated the product and what the purchasers of the air conditioner value in their review.
- Second, I dug deeper into the quality of the product, including its warranty, and checked a number of other sites, including American ones, and ranked the product.
- Third, I wanted the products to be on Amazon Canada with Prime shipping because I don’t love going to big box stores and trusting some salesman with his subjective opinion.
The Best Air Conditioners Canada: Reviews
I have sorted my reviews based on what I found would best suit my budget and needs and created a basic list, I would consider these to be a ranking of the best air conditioners on Amazon Canada. I’m also aiming to write key blog posts on:
- What to look for in a portable air conditioner
- Best air conditioners in Canada under $500
- Best air conditioner and heater combos in Canada
What does a good air conditioner have to offer?
A good air conditioner should be portable, light enough that you can move it around your house or apartment without too much difficulty, capable of cooling the room that you are in and be designed for energy efficiency. Higher quality air conditioners offer advanced features such as programing, remote control and an integrated auto evaporation system.
Higher quality portable air conditioners, including window air conditioners, are capable of cooling a room up to 600 square feet. Some higher end air conditioners also include a dual heating function which can serve as a space heater for those colder nights in Canada.
Electric Fan Reviews
Determining the best electric fans in Canada is a slightly more complicated process, particularly because there are so many shapes, sizes, styles and models of fans to choose from. While price and affordability are important, energy efficiency and raw power are also key factors. You can check out my list of the best fans on Amazon Canada here and I will also try and complete a blog posts on fans under $100 that won’t break the bank (I have purchased several).
Ceiling Fan Reviews Canada
Choosing a ceiling fan can be an extreme challenge, I know! You require a combination of aesthetics, power and efficiency and often you would like it to have an integrated light. If you’re a guy reading this, please, please, please show a picture of it to your gf/partner/wife, etc. I learned this the hard way. Now I have it hooked up in the garage! My recommendations for the best ceiling fans in Canada are broken down based cost and aesthetics, and I promise to complete a blog post on the best ceiling fans under $100 (there aren’t many).
Sun Blocking Curtains Canada
A final, and often overlooked, step to keeping your house cool in the summer is the purchase of sun blocking curtains (blackout curtains). You know, the ones they have in hotel rooms. Sun blocking curtains in Canada are easy to come by but finding ones that fit and look good can be challenging. Sun blocking curtains do just that, they block the sun and ultimately the heat generated through your windows from penetrating your home or apartment. These are particularly important if your have a south facing house or apartment and need to keep it cool in the summer. Check out my list of the best sun blocking curtains in Canada below. This was a challenge, believe me. Fortunately, Amazon Canada has a fantastic selection. I do recommend consultation with partners here too!
